About Us
Under the Iceberg recognizes that living with an illness that no one else can see can be difficult. Most people only are aware of what’s on the surface — the tip of the iceberg. They don't see the fatigue, the pain, the doctors' appointments, or the emotional toll that exists underneath.
That’s why Under the Iceberg was created. Founded and run by teens, for teens, our organization provides a safe, welcoming virtual space for young people across the country living with chronic, unseen conditions.
Our Journey
Under the Iceberg was inspired by a personal struggle. By the middle of her sophomore year, Maya Gauhar had spent two years navigating life with scoliosis and wearing a scoliosis brace. Through that journey, she realized just how few spaces existed for teens to talk openly about invisible struggles.
Noting how many other teens were carrying similar burdens, Maya began Under the Iceberg, aiming to create a safe space where no teen with an invisible illness would need to feel alone. Very soon, other teens reached out, requesting to participate and helping build our still-growing community.
What to Expect: During our meetings, we play games, participate in discussions and activities, and occasionally host special events, like our recent mental health Q&A with Dr. Karen Bernstein.
